| Abstract: | CH2M HILL was commissioned by Glasgow City Council to undertake detailed design and preparation of contract documents for the refurbishment of Bell's Bridge, a historic bridge originally constructed as a temporary structure to provide access to the 1988 Glasgow Garden Festival. The bridge is one of the earliest examples of design and build procurement and met the client's specified criteria that “the structure should reflect the excitement and character of the festival event”. The bridge became an icon for the city and has acted as a catalyst for regeneration of the area as a media park and events centre. When built, the structure was the largest rotating swing bridge of its kind, and incorporated innovative features such as inclined plate girders. The structure became the forerunner of many such design competitions and its iconic design has stood the test of time. The original brief was for a temporary structure with a design life of three years. Almost 30 years on, the bridge is being refurbished and made permanent in its original location at a cost of £2 million, £750,000 more than the original construction cost of £1.25 million. |
