cost of construction United States dollar 35 000

Notes

Steep grades led to creation of large steam engines known as "Berkshires" to traverse the grade. Pricing policies of B&A railroad for transportation of goods led to boring of the 5 mile long Hoosac Tunnel further north through the Berkshires. The State Line Tunnel is still the main route from Albany to Boston.
