Notes
In the 1890's, the Kansas City Southern Railroad was building a line from Kansas City, Kansas to the Gulf of Mexico. It became apparent that if a railroad came down from St. Louis, Missouri and Texarkana, Texas to Shreve's Port, Louisiana, it would be likely to skirt around the east end of Caddo Lake and by-pass Mooring's Port, Louisiana. This would be devastating to the survival of the town due to the decline in boat traffic. A group of local businessmen and farmers traveled to Kansas City, Missouri to see what could be done to induce changing the course of the railroad to crossing the lake at Mooring's Port. Bridging the lake would be far more expensive that going around it. Inducements were offered to the Kansas City Southern Railroad of money and free right-of-ways. The railroad came in 1897 with a wooden trestle spanning the lake and shortly thereafter, a train depot was constructed.
