Renovation of the Müngsten Bridge

The Müngsten Bridge is 465 m long and, at 107 m high, the highest steel lattice bridge in Germany. Due to its dimensions and pioneering assembly principles, it is still one of the most important German railroad bridges.

Built in 1897 as an iron structure, the construction of this rail link between the two Bergisch towns of Solingen and Remscheid meant a great relief, since until the bridge was built, people could only reach each other by rail via a 44-km detour.

After well over 100 years, Müngsten Bridge required extensive repair to ensure traffic and structural safety. The repair will take place over a period of several years and in close coordination with the monument authorities.

Large-scale suspended scaffolding 480 m long and 12 m wide

In the first construction phase (Lot 1), the roadway bridge was renewed and replaced by a new welded structure. For this purpose, TEUPE provided a large-scale suspended scaffold over the entire bridge length of 480 m and the width of 12 m. The full length and width of the suspended scaffold was equipped with a floor trough to protect the environment. Furthermore, the 28 roller bearings between the scaffold bridges and the abutments or scaffold piers were replaced. For this purpose, the scaffold bridges were lifted, removed and the new bearings installed. During this work, the railroad line had to be closed. TEUPE was also contracted to erect twelve complex suspended scaffolds including enclosures for the replacement of the roller bearings. To protect passers-by, four paths were provided with protective enclosures for the duration of the refurbishment phase. For this purpose, four protective tunnels were built.

The Müngsten Bridge consortium, Lot 2 (consisting of the companies Schachtbau Nordhausen Stahlbau GmbH, Tiefenbach GmbH and Teupe & Söhne Gerüstbau GmbH) was awarded the contract for all services relating to the renewal of the steel structure, corrosion protection and strengthening of the bridge structure. TEUPE's share of the contract includes parts of the site logistics, all scaffolding work and protective enclosures, as well as the provision of all access technology for the execution of the steel construction, corrosion protection and refurbishment work.

Comprehensive corrosion protection for historic railroad bridge

Since 2014, the trestle bridges, the trestle piers and the arch as well as the abutments have been repaired. This involves replacing damaged steel parts and replacing loose rivets and bolts. In addition, the entire structure is being given comprehensive corrosion protection. The work is being carried out under the protection of enclosures to prevent blasting debris from entering the environment. Two mobile, large-volume scaffold structures are currently being used for the section-by-section refurbishment of the scaffold bridges, which will be moved 19 times along the length of the bridge. TEUPE was also awarded the contract for the section-by-section scaffolding, including the complete enclosure of the six bridge piers. For this, more than 40,000 m³ of modular and special scaffolding material will be used over the construction period. Due to the extreme slope and the considerable bridge height, a very complex foundation for the scaffolds is required. To adapt the scaffolds to the inclination of the piers, object-specific special scaffold ledgers were developed which are used on all pier scaffolds. The entire engineering design, technical processing, construction and verification is carried out in-house by TEUPE.

The execution of the rehabilitation work on the Müngsten Bridge has been ongoing since 2013 and is expected to continue until 2018.
