Lewis & Clark Bridge Opens

On Sunday, December 18, 2016, the East End Crossing -- an 8½-mile stretch of highway connecting eastern Louisville with Southern Indiana -- opened to traffic. It includes the new Lewis and Clark Bridge, which was named the day of the opening. Hundreds of people who played a role in the East End Crossing attended the opening ceremony. A crowd of 500+ motorists participated in a public caravan. And some 100 bicyclists braved the elements to be among the first to cross the bridge. Indiana Governor-elect Holcomb led the caravan by driving a Ford F-250 pickup alongside a Lincoln Navigator filled with Kentucky officials. Both vehicles were built at the Ford Truck plant in eastern Louisville, which is only six miles from the bridge. The East End Crossing is part of the $2.3 billion Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges Project which also includes the new Lincoln Bridge in downtown Louisville and Jeffersonville plus the reconfigured Kennedy Interchange.
