Abstract:

The plan form of the Western Morning News building reflects the curved contours of the sloping site. With the elevation also curved to help reduce glare, the building resembles the hull of a ship - an analogy which grew with the project. The building is cut into the ground on the south side. On the north side the land slopes away from the building, giving spectacular views over the Devon countryside. The 15,000 m² building within the external glass envelope is divided into two parts for the separate functions of the offices and the printing facilities. Reinforced concrete was adopted to provide a self-finished structure which has been left exposed with services visible.
