Abstract:

Structural performance and EN 1993-1 compliant design formats for frame corners with a bolted tension splice.

For frame knees considered as fixed/stiff according to EN 1993-1-8, the structural performance of the rafter bolted to a tension slice is analyzed by means of a simple frame model with respect to maximum loadcarrying capacities of components (plastic calculation). Refering to this, formulas of calculations to determine the internal forces and the proofs of carrying capacity of the components due to EN 1993-1-1 and 1993-1-8 including a proof with extreme values are shown. Possible special regulations of national appendices of EN 1993-1-1 and 1993-1-8 remain here without consideration. With regard to the guarantied lower limit of the plastic collapse load several safe and economic calculation formats for the bolted side of a frame knee are shown.
The example of a built hall construction shows that - following the proposed design formats - frequently demanded/arranged and additionally costs raising tension flange reinforcements are unnecessary.
