Abstract:

In May 1990, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) created a new Technical Committee, CEN/TC 250 Structural Eurocodes. This Committee was given the mandate to elaborate Codes of Practice within the following scope: Standardization of structural design rules for building and civil engineering works taking into account the relationship between design rules and the assumptions to be made for materials, execution and control. With the elaboration of Structural EUROCODES, a comprehensive set of standards reflecting the actual state of the art will be created in accordance with the Council Directive on Construction Products for the European area in the field of structural engineering. It is intended to give it a format which on the one hand takes account of the aspects of public safety and the interests of public and private clients with regard to economy and serviceability and on the other hand takes account of the necessary liberty of the designers and the efforts for innovation made by the construction industry.
