Abstract:

If a flat roof is relatively easily deformed, excessive accumulation of water on the roof can give rise to the ponding effect, whereby autoexcitation of the deformation occurs, possibly leading to collapse. This article examines the conditions under which the ordinary limits for deflections of roofs under variable loads are sufficient to withstand the ponding effect.
