Abstract:

This article provides a brief description of the winning project in the design competition put out by the Rome City Council in 1999 for the construction of a new bridge over the River Tiber. The project, which was selected from tenders from 52 teams from all over Europe, is for a large bowstring arch bridge which is braced by its own deck. The bridge design was largely governed by the need to integrate it as far as possible with its surrounding natural and urban environment. The design of the cross-section responds to the Rome Council's desire to include pedestrian walkways and cycle paths as well as for the need to set aside certain areas on the bridge which could be used for cultural exhibitions during the summer months.
