Abstract:

The ISO 9000 standard series was introduced in 1987, with revisions published in 1994. The purpose of the research which resulted in the present paper was to collect objective and representative evidence of the practicability of applying ISO 9001 to consulting engineering services in Hong Kong. In the course of the research, a total of ten consulting firms were selected to investigate their experience from operating a QMS according to ISO 9001. The survey was conducted in two phases between November 1995 and January 1996. The first phase was to evaluate the shortcomings of ISO 9001 for consulting engineering process. The second phase was to determine the experience of installing and implementing a QMS to ISO 9001 from the firms participating in the survey.
