Abstract:

Repair and static saving of the main church of Pfaffenhofen/Ilm, Germany

The main nave of St. Johannes Baptist in Pfaffenhofen a. d. Ilm still possesses its historic roof structure from the late 15th century. The couple roof with its main trusses was erected during the building's late gothic extension. its western part as added in 1910 after the historic model; the roof above the sanctuary was rebuild in around 1900. A series of damage made a thorough restoration of the church inevitable: the roof trusses' base joints were decayed, and the walls and vaults showed cracks and deformations. In a thorough survey, the damage was systematically recorded and its causes analyzed. The preservation of the church's valuable interior its 17th century stucco made special care during the restoration necessary: all measures were planned and carried out with a special focus on the conservation of historic substance. The underpinning of the sanctuary will follow in the next construction phase; the restoration of the interior is intended as the final step.
