Abstract:

A general shear link (SL) dissipator for seismic design

This article presents a general shear link (SL) dissipator for seismic design. The device can be use for enhancing the seismic strength of existing structures or for providing ductility for new buildings. The former application suggests an innovative structural system where a designer may localize ductility demands at specific points. Consequently, it is a step forward in actual conventional design practice based on ductile flexible frames or stiff walls since this connection may provide a stiff but ductile structural system. The article describes the proposed general SL devices giving design tables. The devices yielding force varies from 13,65 kN up to 435,5 kN. The yielding displace is very small, around 0,25 mm for all the devices. Numerical-experimental correlations are presented for a device hysteretic loops and for a S.D.O.F linear system equipped with SL devices. The article concludes with nonlinear response spectra for preliminary selection of the devices, and it briefth describes the first building equipped with these dissipators constructed in Lima, Peru.
