Abstract:

Quantum Cloud is a 30-m-high, 16-m-wide and 10-m-deep elliptical cloud sculpture that stands on four cast iron caissons in the River Thames adjacent to the Millennium Dome in London. It is the latest work of "Angel of the North" sculptor Antony Gormley, and is formed from 1.5-m-long lengths of randomly oriented steel sections which diffuse at the edges and condense into a 20-m-high form of a human body at the center. The use of innovative engineering ideas and custom-made software to model and prove the structural integrity of the sculpture ensured that the design and analysis of a complex structure was completed to the sculptor's satisfaction in a very tight time scale.
