Abstract:

Potsdamer Platz, in the geographic middle of Berlin, has been a mirror of the city's political and social history. Until its destruction in the Second World War, it was the intersection between the historic centre of Berlin and the city's modern suburbs. More a traffic junction than a traditional European square, Potsdamer Platz was the synonym for urban vitality and sophistication. Its location near the government district of Berlin, meant that Potsdamer Platz suffered enormous damage during the Second World War and the later construction of the Berlin Wall. After the reunification of Germany in 1989 there was room for visions.
