Abstract:

Architectural concepts of the new Terminal Area

To combine beauty and functionality. This was the aim in extending Barajas airport, the largest recent civil building in Europe, designed by the Spanish Estudio Lamela, the English Richard Rogers Partnership and TPS and INITEC consulting engineering firms. More than one million square metres are covered by the Terminal, Satellite and Car Park buildings. The roof, exterior aluminium clad and interior bamboo lined, is the element shaping the undulating silhouette of the complex which will be able to handle up to 70 million passengers a year.
