Abstract:

This paper begins with a discussion of the large variety of modern materials recently employed or soon to find application in bridge construction. Since a comprehensive coverage of the subject exceeds the scope of the present work, the paper focuses on the use of fibrous composites. It gives an overview of the state of the art for these materials, and the example of carbon fiber-reinforced epoxies is used to illustrate developments that can be expected in the near and intermediate future.
