Abstract:

Besides the concrete deck slab, continuous steel composite bridges with double composite action have a concrete bottom chord at the haunches over the main piers. This concrete bottom chord increases stiffness and reduces construction costs. The advantages of this system are illustrated by three bridges with main spans up to more than 200 m. In addition, prestressing versus reinforcing of the roadway slab at the piers is discussed.
