Abstract:

Transmission of forces of high strength concrete columns through normal strength flat slabs - design according to EN 1992-1-1

A specially designed slab column joint can transmit forces of high strength columns trough normal strength flat slabs. Presently none of the in Germany officially acknowledged codes for structural engineering (including the Eurocodes) provide with direct design rules for those slab column joints. Hence, this article presents a design method for highly loaded slab column joints which combines rules for strut and tie models, partially loaded areas and confined concrete according to DIN EN 1992-1-1. This design method is validated with selected tests and could enable the engineer to design highly loaded slab column joints on the basis of officially acknowledged codes.
