Abstract:

Contribution on fatigue assessment of steel bridges according to Eurocode.

This article gives an overview about a part of the results of a DASt/IGF-Research project dealing with the evolution and the specification of the fatigue assessment for highway and railway steel bridges. This project was initiated through the experiences of the consulting offices and steel companies when applying the DIN-Fachberichte that have allowed for the application of the new European rules in bridge design since 2003. It turned out that the new rules cause higher fabrication and material expenses that can be mainly attributed to the new fatigue design approach. The research project was supposed to reveal possibilities for simplification and to improve the today's situation by answering a couple of questions on the fatigue actions, on the fatigue resistance of typical bridge-related constructional details (as the presented bearing plate) and on the assessment approach.
