Abstract: The Metropolitan Cathedral of Guatemala which was damaged by the violent 1976 earthquake, has now been repaired. The Cathedral which dates from the colonial period, and which has been hit several times by earthquakes but each time restored, comprised certain reconstructions in reinforced concrete dating from the beginning of this century. In 1976 the concrete parts resisted well but caused damage to the rest and hampered the works. The article describes the structure, the damage and the repair works which have required both ancient and modern techniques. Prestressing has been applied extensively.
