Abstract:

Towards further development of the seismic engineering, two new buildings were constructed at the Obayashi Co. Technical Research Institute located in a suburb of Tokyo. The buildings incorporate the following three advanced seismic technologies.

First, an active base isolation system using an absolute vibration control technology is applied to the real full scale building for the first time in the world.

Secondly, ultra high strength steels (780 MPa and 1000 MPa) are utilized for the main columns. Section of the columns is reduced accordingly. It leads to free open space.

Finally, special dampers (friction slip damper “FSD” and friction slip damper with two levels of slip force “FSD2”) are utilized to improve seismic energy absorption.

These technologies provide superior seismic performance without losing freedom of planning.
