| 1940s | The bridge is no longer required to open and the concrete counterweights are removed. |

| 1989 | The Louisiana Department of Transportation & Development (LA DOTD) receives founding to build a replacement bridge and demolish this one. Local residents campaign for the bridge to be preserved. |
| 26 June 1991 | Caddo Parish Commissioners votes to accept the bridge into the Caddo Parish Department of Parks and Recreation. |
| 18 October 1996 | Entered in the National Register of Historic Places. |
