Chronology
| 9 May 1980 | A navigational error causes a large freight ship Summit Venture to hit a bridge pier during a storm. The cantilever span of one of the superstructures collapses into Tampa Bay. Several vehicles and a Greyhound bus fall into the waters killing 35 people. |
