Railroad tracks on bottom deck are removed and the deck is converted for vehicular use.

1983

Counterweights are removed so that the vertical lift span is no longer functional.

November 2011

The bridge is re-opened for non-vehicular traffic.

Comment by Kathy Grow, author of "The Bridge We Built":

"Railroad track was probably never actually fastened to the lower deck of the Meridian Bridge, as best we could tell after three years of extensive research. Some track did lay there for a time, but was certainly never used. The misconception usually arises from a popular 'artist's rendition' of the bridge, done prior to its construction, which shows track on the bottom deck."
