Chronology
| 11 April 1996 | During welding works as part of upgrading and maintenance of terminal building B, sparks start a smoldering fire in the ventilation ducts. Heavy and toxic smoke fills the entire terminal building, 17 people die asphyxiated. The building is unusable for months. Terminal A remains unaffected, C only slightly. |

| November 1996 | Terminal building C is re-opened. |
| 1997 | Construction begins for a long-distance train station. |
| March 1997 | Architectural design competition to replace terminal building B is won by JSK Architekten. |
| December 1998 | Demolition of Terminal B begins. Parking garage no. 1 is also demolished to make room for the extended new terminal. |
| 1999 | Construction for new underground parking at terminal B begins. |
| 17 March 1999 | Marlies Smeets, mayor of Düsseldorf, and Wolfgang Clement, prime minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, lay the first stone for the new terminal building. |
| 28 May 2000 | The new long distance train station begins railroad services. Up to 300 trains a day stop at the station. |
| 1 July 2001 | Terminal B is opened for passenger service. President Johannes Rau is present during the inauguration. |
| 1 July 2002 | The SkyTrain monorail begins service between the main terminals and the long-distance railroad station. |
