Chronology

20 December 2008

The original Southern Star wheel opens to the public.

30 January 2009

After only 40 days of operation the wheel is closed again after up to three-meter long cracks were discovered during lighting installation. A total of fourteen cracks are then found in the structure and the cause is finally determined to be a design flaw. The original wheel structure is then dismantled and sold for scrap while the support structure and gondolas are kept.

23 December 2013

The attraction, renamed Melbourne Star, is re-opened after a lengthy phase of re-design and re-building of the wheel.
