The swing span, imported from Belgium, is made of steel but 12 approach spans are of Allan type with local eucalypt (Australian Iron Bark) hardwood compression members and vertical steel rods in tension.

Total cost was 112,500 pounds sterling in 1902 when a carpenter was paid 10 shillings (0.5 pounds) per day. One of world's first electrically-operated swing bridges. Roadway now restricted to pedestrian and monorail traffic but swing span regularly in operation to allow access to inner harbor basin.
