Lane of the elevated railway viaducts in the course of the underground line U2 in Berlin, Germany - redevelopment with consideration of the historic monument protection.
The lane in the overhead railway viaducts of the underground line U2 in the Schönhauser avenue in Berlin consists - as at many other similar engineering structures in Berlin, e. g. the Yorckbrücken - of crushed stone-filled buckled plates, on which the tracks with cross sills were installed. This construction worked satisfactorily in metropolitan railway traffic for over one hundred years.
In the context of the redevelopment of the overhead railway viaducts including their bridge bearings - over this in a later issue this journal will have to be reported - also the lane should be complete renewed. The thought to the installation of a deckinglane was not continued to pursue, but the proven solution with the crushed stone-filled buckled plates the preference given. As special challenge the production of buckled plates turned out in different dimensions. Welded structures, like even reinforced steel sheets (similarly orthotropic plates) were ruled out for reasons of the monument protection. The original manufacturing process by dies was not possible because of the very large number the one which can be reproached different die forming from economic reasons.
The new buckled plates in the same different dimensions could be manufactured by a new and patent protected procedure as the original plates considering the monument protection and economically. With the installation into the likewise reorganized sub-construction the rivet joint was replaced by high-tensile bolts. In the report above all the production and the installation of the buckled plates into the viaduct construction are described.
