Abstract:

Shell Wars. A Civil Engineer Drama in Nine Acts. Dedicated to the 125th birthday of Franz Dischinger

Shortly after it had developed a groundbreaking method for the construction of thin concrete shells, the building enterprise Dyckerhoff & Widmann became the stage for the encounter of two brilliant civil engineers, Franz Dischinger and Ulrich Finsterwalder. The article describes important episodes of their conflict-riddled cooperation, which provided in less than a decade the theoretical and practical basis that would enable thin concrete shell constructions to conquer the whole world.
