Abstract: The world's longest suspension bridge, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, is now under construction. This paper reports on mathematical analysis and hydraulic model experiments conducted to estimate the effect on tidal flow in the surrounding sea of the reclaimed land for anchorages on each side of the Akashi Straits, and of the piers for the main towers in the middle of the Straits.
